Land Speedsailing

There are many different types of land sailing - on surf-wax we aim to show you the sailing which happens on beaches. But given that you need a pretty big beach without to many pedestrians, it is not going to be a main stream sport. And you need to have some level of skill before you can take to the beach for fear of colliding with rocks, dogs, people and any other obstacles which appear from nowhere to challenge you.

Most people who landsail tend to use a windsurfing type sail and then fashion some kind of board to stand on, or a buggy to sit in.

The picture shows below land speedsailing. Speedsailing, a cross between windsurfing & skateboarding has been an outdoor activity for over 20 years. Originating in France, the idea of speedsailing was as a light wind and winter alternative to windsurfing. Much of the equipment used in windsurfing can be used for speedsailing. Although similar to windsurfing, the sport is affiliated to the Land Yachting Association, which also includes kite buggies. As a sport, speedsailing is easier to learn than it's water based counterpart, yet a lot of moves, particularly in freestyle can be learned on the speedsail and then transferred to the water.

You can also adapt a mountain board to take a mast, but we feel the board is slightly so small to give a good ride. All you need to do, is drill a hole through the deck and fix a deck plate to it...The hole goes right at the front of the board as close to the middle as you can get it (on framed boards it has to be slightly offset so as not to drill through the frame). If you don't want to drill through your mountain board then you could try using your mountain board with a kite.

We have recently come across a skatewing, the idea of this is to skate with a windsurf type sail fixed to your boots. This Skatewing can also be used with a mountain board, check back soon as we hope to have a skatewing to evaluate.

We can't mention landsailing without taking a look at the Kiwi's invention, the blokart. This cool piece of equipment is on sale here in the UK, but is very expensive (£1000+ ish), but it has to be said it looks to be very good fun. <more info>

courtesy of landyachting.co.uk Finally there is landyachting, this could be said to be a little more sedentry, you get to sit down for your ride in a yacht but that is the only easy bit, once the wind takes you, you can blast down the beach, whilst using the sail to steer. Most landyachts are 3 wheeled, a single wheels at the front and 2 wheels to the rear, on a wide axle (to aid balance).

Both blokarting and landyachting require a big big big expanse of beach!!

All of these sports require good safety equipment and protection too, helmets, wrist pads, knee pads, elbow protectors etc etc.
