Power Kites

things to do with a kite - scud, jump, kiteATB, buggy, surf, syncronised flying

rivedoux, la rochelle,

According to those who don't know any better, flying a kite is for girls!! and families and kids...but the new generation of kites brought out in recent years has changed the art of flying a kite to quite a brutal and exhilarating experience that will take your breath away and the ground away from under your feet.

Flying power kites is becoming a very popular pastime. Power kites produce power, so flying it becomes a battle between you, the kite and the wind!!

Remember..... practise practise practise..... learn good accurate kite control skills before progressing to buggies, ATB, surfing etc

BEWARE, IT IS ADDICTIVE! and a danger to your credit card...

The most important thing is to learn to control the kite. It is best to do this in light to moderate winds and in a vast expanse of open land. We take our kite to the beach at low tide, thus getting loads of space. Woolacombe (N Devon), is a favourite, you don't have to walk to far to get away from the crowds, or at the Duck Pond (low tide), Exmouth.

When learning you will need a big expanse of beach, it is so easy to loose control and beach the kite! So take care of those poor unsuspecting dog walkers who are quite likely to be under the kite as it plumets, beware of the dogs themselves, they love chasing kites.

Of course once you have mastered the power of the kite, you will be ready to let the kite pull you along the ground - scudding or learn to jump - or get out a mountain board, a buggy, skis, skateboard, snowboard, canoe, surf board...the list goes on.

Or you could show your off-spring how to fly, then they have something to do whilst you are enjoying yourself!

When you are out to impress,
this is how you launch your kite

a minor scud through soft sand

a 4.5 Razor (1.3mg)

Just flying the kite on it's own is quite a buzz. If you have good upper body strength you may last an hour or so, otherwise get a harness, for us girlies without much arm strength the harness is a must. It is a little bit like stepping into a nappy, but the best thing about using a kite with the harness is that the pull of the kite now comes from the centre of your body, lower back, and upper legs. In fact the legs are thrown forwards abit, this makes it far more unlikely that you are going to get dragged along the beach by your arms!! and far more likely that you will be able to drag, scud or jump sucessfully.

If you plan to buy a kite do some research here on the net first. Then ask the advice of the person from whom you are buying. You need to consider the weight and fitness of the person flying the kite, the activities you plan to do, and the wind strength. A foil kite is a better kite for dry land, an inflatable (LEI leading Edge Inflatable) is better for surfing. Although it appears that new kites coming on to the market are going to challenge the inflatable for surfing - we may all be using foils for everything soon!
