Surfing, I think, hit the UK in the 1960s, it is only in latter years that it has gained popularity and is now getting more coverage and professional surfers now stand a chance of getting sponsored. This also has its disadvantages, the seas are far more busy. If you are lucky enough to live in the South West (or elsewhere in the UK near to a surfing beach), you won't be too bothered about the beaches being full of visitors in July and August because the surf is very weak in those months, the best surf is to be had in late September and October when the region has emptied of the majority of visitors. For the rest of the year the diehards enter the water, the water is freezing in March, but at least you have it to yourself!!! Make sure you have your 5mm wetsuit, boots, gloves and twat hat.....You'll be suprised how long you can stay in the water if you are wearing the right gear!

Almost every surf beach in the South West has a surf school, so it can be worth while either having a weekend away to pick up the basics or just a 2 hour session. It always helps to have a nudge in the right direction as to how to surf, how to stand, how to catch a wave etc. There's not that many people who can walk into the sea and master it in 30 seconds, most of us need a little help to get started.

We also have a selection of videos which explain some of the surfing moves. Each page has a brief description of the move and a movie. Each movie is about 200k so please have patience as the page loads.
